Proton Mail works in LocalInbox through Proton Mail Bridge, Proton's app that runs on your Mac. Install Bridge and sign in to Proton in it, then copy the IMAP user name and password Bridge shows for the account into LocalInbox. Keep Bridge running while you use LocalInbox.
Proton Mail Bridge is available on Proton's paid plans.
Use the password Bridge shows, not your Proton password.
Steps
- Install Proton Mail Bridge and sign in to your Proton account in it.
- In Bridge, open the account's mailbox details for IMAP and SMTP.
- In LocalInbox, open Settings › Accounts and click Add Account (or use the welcome screen the first time).
- Choose Proton Mail and enter your Proton address.
- Copy the user name and password Bridge shows into LocalInbox and click Add.
Proton Mail Bridge: proton.me/mail/bridge. LocalInbox's own button opens the same page.
Server settings
| Server | Host name | Port | Security |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incoming (IMAP) | 127.0.0.1 | 1143 | STARTTLS |
| Outgoing (SMTP) | 127.0.0.1 | 1025 | STARTTLS |
These are Bridge's defaults. If Bridge shows different ports, use those.
Troubleshooting
LocalInbox says nothing is answering at the port
Proton Mail Bridge isn't running. Open Bridge, and keep it open while you use LocalInbox.
LocalInbox says it can't connect
The message says what to fix: nothing answering at the port, the wrong kind of TLS for the port, an untrusted certificate, an unknown server name, or a timeout. Check the server settings below against the ones LocalInbox filled in.
Questions
Is Proton Mail still end-to-end encrypted in LocalInbox?
Bridge decrypts mail on your Mac and hands it to LocalInbox over a connection on your Mac (127.0.0.1). Nothing passes through a LocalInbox server.
