How to add any IMAP email account to LocalInbox

Add any IMAP and SMTP email account to LocalInbox on Mac: your own domain, your host's mail or your company's server.

In short

LocalInbox works with any mail server that speaks IMAP and SMTP. Choose Other IMAP account, enter your address and password (or an app password if your provider requires one), and check the server settings LocalInbox guesses from your address.

Steps

  1. In LocalInbox, open Settings › Accounts and click Add Account (or use the welcome screen the first time).
  2. Choose Other IMAP account and enter your address and password.
  3. Open Server settings. LocalInbox guesses imap.<your domain> and smtp.<your domain>, port 993 and 465 with TLS. Change them to what your provider gives you.
  4. Click Add.

Server settings

Your provider's help pages list the IMAP and SMTP host names, ports and security. If you type a Gmail or iCloud address here, LocalInbox offers that service's own steps instead.

Troubleshooting

LocalInbox says it can't connect

The message says what to fix: nothing answering at the port, the wrong kind of TLS for the port, an untrusted certificate, an unknown server name, or a timeout. Check the server settings below against the ones LocalInbox filled in.

LocalInbox says the password is wrong

Use the app password, not the password you sign in to the website with. If you've just made one, copy it again; it's shown only once.

Questions

Where does LocalInbox keep the password?

In the macOS Keychain on your Mac. It's never written to a file or sent anywhere except your mail server.

Does LocalInbox support POP3 or Exchange (EWS)?

No. LocalInbox uses IMAP for reading and SMTP for sending. Outlook and Microsoft 365 sign-in is coming soon.

Can I send from an alias on my own domain?

Yes. Send-as aliases each get their own signature, Reply-To and, if you need one, their own SMTP server.
